Helping Students Build Real Understanding
Aurora STEAM Lab was created with a simple but powerful belief: every child deserves a place where their potential is recognized, nurtured, and celebrated. We offer a structured, curriculumbased STEAM experience where students follow individualized learning pathways shaped by assessments and their personal interests because no two learners grow the same way.
We guide them through concepts with clarity and curiosity, creating those moments where everything clicks and confidence begins to grow. As students learn, they’re encouraged to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways through hands-on practice, guided challenges, and opportunities to explore ideas that matter to them.
Community is at the Heart of our Work
Students learn to connect with others, collaborate, communicate, and support one another, building the social and emotional skills that help them thrive both inside and outside the classroom. Alongside this, we nurture each child’s sense of self, helping them grow into confident, capable individuals who recognize their strengths and embrace new challenges with resilience.
Most importantly, we help students understand the impact they can make. Whether they’re solving a problem, creating something new, or discovering a passion they didn’t know they had, we want every learner to see themselves as someone who can shape their world in meaningful ways.
We incorporate hands-on projects and creative challenges to deepen learning and spark curiosity, all within a curriculum framework that ensures steady, meaningful progress. This balance allows students to explore, imagine, and apply their knowledge while still building strong foundations across every STEAM discipline.
Our Team
Farah Boubsil
Farah is an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, pursuing a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and public health. She loves engaging students in STEAM activities and sparking their curiosity through her passion for science and art. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her cat, painting, and reading comics.
Sarah Brooks
I've worked with children off and on for the past six years. I have a passion for learning and teaching, especially students who have extra needs. I love art, reading, and math. I hope to show the students the joy in all of these subjects!
Maedot Yeheyis
My name is Maedot Yeheyis and I am a rising sophomore attending UMBC in the Meyerhoff Scholars Program. I have a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major and a Quantitative Biology minor. After undergrad, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences. I have been a junior counselor, tutor, and mentor for kids. In my spare time, I love to dance, go to concerts, and do photography. My favorite STEAM subject is science and I'm excited to be a staff member!
Mary Holiman
Mary holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master of Public Health in community health science and practice. She is currently a PhD student studying health communication. A self-proclaimed “arts-in-health enthusiast,” Mary is passionate about incorporating more arts-based practices into STEM curriculum as she believes no issue is tied to only one discipline. She lives by this quote of Ayesha Siddiqi, “Be the person you needed when you were younger.” Mary is looking forward to learning more about robotics and coding, while nurturing the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and artists.
Ethen Cheng
I'm Ethen and I recently graduated with a degree in Information Systems. I enjoy helping students learn and build confidence through creativity and hands-on STEAM activities. I have always loved building with LEGOs and exploring technology, and I am excited to create a fun and supportive learning environment for our students and community!"
Benjamin Carter
Hi, my name is Benjamin and I usually go by Benji, but I am not really picky about it. I am a 20 year old university student currently pursuing a degree in Mathematics. I believe STEAM concepts are something every child should experience, so I'm happy to play a role in that. I've also tutored before and participated in leadership roles in some high school clubs. And when I'm not in the building helping students learn, you can find me at home listening to music or playing video games.
Ansruta Muthoju
Anshu Muthoju is a rising sophomore studying Biocomputational Engineering at the University of Maryland. As a certified biotechnician assistant with prior experience in robotics, she loves turning complex scientific concepts into tangible, exciting creations. She has a passion for inspiring the next generation of innovators through hands-on learning and collaborative problem-solving. When she isn't guiding fun lab experiments for students, she spends her time painting and trying out new pasta recipes at home.
Donovan Gamble
I am a rising-junior Mechanical Engineering Major at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted to be an engineer. This naturally led to me having a great interest in STEAM topics such as engineering, robotics, physics, and math. I am very passionate about these topics, and I am always happy to share my knowledge with others. I also really enjoy helping others, especially when it comes to teaching and learning.

This past spring semester at UMBC, I had the wonderful opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant for the Physics II: Electricity and Magnetism course. As the students worked on a packet in groups, I would do my best to answer questions and guide them without giving away the solution to allow students to better understand the topics for the week. I strongly believe in meeting students at their level, as this will help them to better engage with the material. I am very excited to be working at the Aurora STEAM Lab this summer! I look forward to meeting and working with the campers to expand their understanding of STEAM topics and to see the real-world applications of these topics. I am confident we all will have an amazing, fun time at camp!
Peyton Ashley
Hello! My name is Peyton Ashley, and I am excited to be an instructor at Aurora Steam Lab this summer.I am a rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Business Technology Administration. I enjoy learning about technology, leadership, and problem-solving, and I am passionate about helping others learn and grow.

Outside of school, I enjoy a variety of activities, including golf, tennis, robotics, and 3D printing. I love staying active, exploring new technologies, and sharing my interests with others. My experience working with children includes serving as a counselor during multiple summers with Anne Arundel County summer camps, where I helped create a fun, safe, and engaging environment for campers. I have also taught private tennis lessons, which strengthened my ability to communicate effectively, adapt to different learning styles, and help young people build confidence while developing new skills. Families should know that I strive to be a positive role model who encourages campers to try new things, make new friends, and have fun while feeling supported and included. My goal is to help create an exciting and memorable camp experience for every child.
Abdul Sesay
Abdul Sesay is a rising sophomore studying Mechatronics from Baltimore County. With a natural curiosity for how things work, he spends his free time reading and disassembling everyday objects to explore their inner mechanics. This hands-on approach to learning reflects his broader passion for problem-solving and design core principles that drive his growth as an engineer.
Niya Basha
I am currently a student at Howard Community College pursuing a STEM-focused education. I enjoy working with students and helping create positive, engaging learning experiences. Through my academic and professional experiences, I have developed strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. I am passionate about education and enjoy supporting students as they learn and grow. Outside of work and school, I enjoy exploring technology, learning new skills, and taking on opportunities that help me grow both personally and professionally. I look forward to working with students and families and contributing to a positive learning environment.
